2011 review – a year at Flux

There is much for me to be thankful for, everything to be pleased about…

And here, 3 years after its inception, is a shining example of Flux Studios at its best, achieving all its objectives:

Flux students are inspired to learn more and explore the possibilities of becoming professionals, and become members…

Graduates become members to develop collections and business skills to promote and sell their work….

Members are supported to explore their market through open studios and exhibitions…

Members are given opportunities to develop teaching skills…

Members are challenged to speak about their work through interactions with students…

Students are surrounded by a massive creative community…

Members support each other by sharing workshop skills, business skills and connections…

Members become successful and fly away to set up their own studio…

But always, I hope, they remain Fluxy at heart!

Instant attraction and magnetic charm at Flux!

Our theme for the term on Tuesdays is on the use of magnets for clasps in jewellery, and as it is our firm belief that play holds the key to true innovation, today we played like kiddies in a toyshop!
Drawing from the deep recesses half-remembered facts on the laws of magnetic attraction – along with some cautions for pacemakers and credit cards – students were sent on a hunt to find the most unusual magnetic objects..

Most expensive gemstone jadeite

Jadeite shares top spot as one of most expensive gemstones

But for me none of these gems has the allure of Alexandrite, a spectacular stone that has the ability to change colour depending on lighting conditions. Blue-green in natural daylight, this remarkable gem turns pink-purple in incandescent light. It’s a magical night and day stone, truly a gem for the romantic heart.

So if you are looking for a gift that speaks romance and adventure, look for Alexandrite, choice of the tzars!

Family workshop Fun!

Look at these fabulous pewter pendants / medals / objects made by children and their adults at Flux Studios this weekend!

We had an invasion of robot – spacemen whose inspiration came perhaps through cloudy skies on shooting stars.

Thankfully our own earth based ghoulies in the form of skulls, skeletons, spiders and night birds were at the ready to defend us!

Medusa Collection by Vicky Forrester

Reclaiming the power of the Snake Goddess, the Medusa collection combines leather and sterling silver into alluring coils that reflect the movement of the snake. Sharp points, hooks, rattling bone-like beads all combine to create edgy, powerful and seductive jewellery that can be worn in numerous ways on the body. These snaking coils can be twisted and manipulated to create unlimited sculptural and wearable forms that wrap around the hand, arm, neck, waist…all waiting to play with you.

Nick really pushed the techniques to produce all these rings!
