Have you ever tried enamelling as a means to add colour to your jewellery, but with limited success?
To the uninitiated, enamelling can seem quite an unpredictable technique – in process, the glass powder you start with can behave quite differently depending on the metal, the thickness, and the firing time you give it. But with practice, care and attention you can take control of the process to get results exactly how you’d want them!
On this course you’ll learn to test, observe, and record, so you can work out what any colour or material will do — and keep exploring it long after the course ends.

What will I learn?
On day one, you’ll build your own colour samples — testing how colour, metal, and firing temperature affect the result, in the way you’d run a controlled experiment. You’ll leave with a record you can use to recreate what you liked.
On day two, you’ll design and make a final piece using what you learned – this could be a pendant, earrings, or additional samples for future reference.
Dry sifting and wet inlay are the core techniques that we’ll cover in depth. Depending on your design and interest, we may also touch on approaches like cloisonné, champlevé, or sgraffito, though not in great depth, given the time.
We’ll also cover finishing methods, including cold connections and, for those interested, how soldering can be used before enamelling to build more complex settings and structures.
What will I produce?
You’ll leave with a set of your own colour samples, plus a piece in progress based on your own design — and a method you can keep using to further explore enamel on your own, for your next projects.
Materials
Copper is provided for use during the course. If you’d like to work with your own precious metal, you’re welcome to bring it — Please note, when enamelling, fine silver is recommended over sterling silver, due to the inherent processes and behaviours of the materials involved.
Tea, coffee and light refreshments are provided throughout the weekend.
