Jewellery Inlay Techniques with Crushed Stone: Weekend Course: 2 Days (Sat-Sun).
Book Now
This weekend course introduces students to the exciting art of inlaying crushed stones into silver collets of various shapes to add colour, texture and vibrance to your jewellery.
Traditional in Central and South America, this jewellery inlay technique will allow you to create beautiful silver jewellery with rich and intense colour.
This process is an add-on technique for students with intermediate to advanced silver jewellery making skills.
What will I learn?
We begin with a rounded discussion about appropriate stones for this technique of crushed stone inlay. Some semi-precious stones are particularly hazardous in dust form. You will learn about different stones in their rough forms and you will be guided to select appropriate materials for use in your work. You’ll then prepare your own stone dust and mixture of colours for use over the 2 days.
You will then learn how to inlay the stones into a silver pendant that you have designed and prepared.
After creating your silver pendant by combining soldering and folding techniques.
Once introduced to this technique you can explore its endless possibilities and apply it to your making and design process. Not restricted by the common cuts of gems you will discover new freedom in creating visually more complex jewellery.
What will I produce?
We anticipate that you will produce a piece of jewellery made up of a series of collets that you will fill with crushed stone inlay. Depending on the complexity of your design, you may also have time to produce additional items that explore the technique further.
Materials
The course fee covers the cost of stone materials for crushing, and for non – precious materials,. You will also be provided with silver to make your pendant. If you wish to make additional pieces in silver you may bring your own stock, or we can advise on the purchase of extra materials.
Can I get my work hallmarked?
We are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price.
We’ll provide you with tea, coffee and light refreshments throughout the weekend. You’ll need to bring some lunch.
