Decorative Hand Engraving for jewellers and silversmiths: Weekend Course.

Do you like to draw? Are you passionate about fonts? Jewellery often requires surface detail to be revealed, or a message, a word or a symbol to be cut into it. On this course we introduce one of the oldest jewellery making techniques – decorative hand engraving.
What will I learn?
Hand engraving requires the use of a hand held cutting tool, known as a graver, to cut grooves into metal in order to create a beautiful design.
The success of the cut depends as much on the sharpness of the tool as it does on the hand that holds it! With this in mind, you will learn how to prepare, sharpen and use a graver in order to create different decorative textures such as cross hatching, dotting and frosting.
Once introduced to this technique you can explore its endless possibilities and apply it to your style. Hand engraving is an amazing skill to learn, and you can apply it in so many different ways, from simple to the most elaborate and intricate.
What will I produce?
It is anticipated that you will produce a range of progressive practice pieces that also show your evolving skills in lettering, line and pattern.
Materials
The course fee includes all tools and materials that you’ll need. We will provide you with copper sheet for practice pieces and samples, and these are yours to keep.
At the end of the course you can also purchase the gravers you have used if you wish, for an at-cost fee.
Can I get my work hallmarked?
We are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price.
We’ll provide you with tea, coffee and light refreshments throughout the weekend. You’ll ned to bring some lunch
