SUMMARY:Decorative Hand Engraving (HE03)
DESCRIPTION:Decorative Hand Engraving for jewellers and silversmiths: Weekend Course.\nBook Now\nDo you like to draw? Are you passionate about fonts? Jewellery often requires surface detail to be revealed\, or a message\, a word or a symbol to be cut into it. On this course we introduce one of the oldest jewellery making techniques – decorative hand engraving. \nWhat will I learn?\nHand engraving requires the use of a hand held cutting tool\, known as a graver\, to cut grooves into metal in order to create a beautiful design. \nThe success of the cut depends as much on the sharpness of the tool as it does on the hand that holds it! With this in mind\, you will learn how to prepare\, sharpen and use a graver in order to create different decorative textures such as cross hatching\, dotting and frosting. \nOnce introduced to this technique you can explore its endless possibilities and apply it to your style. Hand engraving is an amazing skill to learn\, and you can apply it in so many different ways\, from simple to the most elaborate and intricate. \nWhat will I produce?\nIt is anticipated that you will produce a range of progressive practice pieces that also show your evolving skills in lettering\, line and pattern. \nMaterials\nThe course fee includes all tools and materials that you’ll need. We will provide you with copper sheet for practice pieces and samples\, and these are yours to keep. \nAt the end of the course you can also purchase the gravers you have used if you wish\, for an at-cost fee. \nCan I get my work hallmarked?\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you  would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price. \nWe’ll provide you with tea\, coffee and light refreshments throughout the weekend. You’ll ned to bring some lunch \nBook Now \nCourse Tutor: Elena Timbaliuc. An additional tutor will assist if more than 7 students enrol for this course \nStudent numbers: 10 \nWeekend Date:  Sat 24 to Sun 25 March 2018 \nClass Times: 10.00am – 5pm daily \nCourse Fee: \nFull fee £225 \n*Concessions £200 \n*If you are on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. SUMMARY:Perfect Pearls (PP2) - Pearl grading and pearl stringing workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn ways to identify different types of Pearl. Combine gemmology and pearl stringing: put your new knowledge straight into practice with an afternoon workshop session to make a knotted string of pearls.\nWould you know if your pearls were dyed or naturally coloured? What is the difference between a Keshi Pearl and a Baroque pearl?  What is the difference between an Akoya Pearl and a Tahitian Pearl? How do Freshwater Pearls differ from the saltwater variety?  These little shell-fish gems have been favoured treasures since the earliest times; still they captivate us with their lustrous beauty. Have you ever fancied trying your hand at pearl stringing? Join us for a pearl grading workshop\, and make your own knotted string of pearls to wear home. \nOn this one day course you’ll have an opportunity to view a wide range of pearls of various type\, size\, colour and quality. We’ll introduce simple methods for basic identification\, and we’ll look beneath the surface of a sample of pearls to understand their structure. Pearls are organic ‘gemstones’. Although quite resilient\, they are sensitive to chemicals and to general wear and tear; we will discuss  how to take care of them. \nWe want you to make use of this knowledge\, so the class begins with a morning gemmology session followed by an afternoon of practical workshop activity to make your own string of pearls using traditional knotting techniques\, using silk and gimp. \nHow will this workshop help you?\nWhen it comes to making jewellery with gems and gem-like natural materials like pearl and amber\, it’s crucial to know a little bit about the qualities of these materials. Gemstone characteristics\, like hardness\, brittleness\, heat resistance\, porosity and cleavage are all important qualities that affect your choice when designing jewellery. Additionally\, when buying gems\, you need to know how to assess the quality of the item on offer. \nAt each session in our gemmology series we discuss the individual characteristics and behaviours of the particular stones\, to help you become better designers – and better stone setters too. \nWe’ve grouped our range of gemstones according to similar hues\, to better help you understand the differences between similar stones. Choose a workshop according to your preferred colour palette – or join up for the full bonanza 5 Saturdays! \nWhat will you gain?\nAs well as gaining a range of great methods to identify the type and quality of your gemstones\, you will get the chance to set your stone type of choice (or for the pearl workshop you will make a knotted string of pearls ) at the workshop\, to wear home. \nMorning Gemmology Schedule:\nUnderstand the differences between types  and qualities of pearls including: Baroque Pearls\, Keshi Pearls\, Round/Oval Pearls\, Dyed Pearls. \nAfternoon Stone Setting schedule:\nMake your own string of pearls from our selection\, using the traditional knotting technique on silk. \nPerfect Pearls (PP1)\nPP2 BOOK NOW\nCourse Tutors: Elena Timbaliuc and Barbora Rybarova \nMax student numbers: 7 \nCourse Date: Saturday 17 December 2017 \nClass Times: 10am – 5pm \nCourse Fee: £120 \nPP2 BOOK NOW

Additionally\, when buying a stone\, you need to know how to assess the quality of the stones on offer. \nWhat will you gain?\nAs well as gaining a range of great methods to identify the type and quality of your gemstones\, you will get the chance to set your stone type of choice at the workshop\, to wear home. Make a tension set ring using silver and your favourite stone of the day\, or if you made one of these with us before\, try bead\, claw or flush setting. \nMorning Gemmology Schedule:\nLearn to identify between a range of blue to purple stones such as Aquamarine\, Topaz\, Tourmaline\, Sapphire\, Tanzanite\, Iolite\, Amethyst\, Flourite. \nAfternoon Stone Setting schedule:\nHow to make a Tension-set silver ring. \nChoose a suitable stone from our selection of semi-precious blue/purple hue stones\, make a silver ring and tension-set your stone into it. SUMMARY:Experimental stone setting techniques - Delft\, Claw and Wax (B28)
DESCRIPTION:Explore experimental and conventional approaches to stone setting. Combine traditional and experimental techniques to produce unusual\, stone-set jewellery. (Evenings\, Tuesdays).\n Book Now\n– On this jewellery course we explore traditional and experimental stone setting techniques in order to re-imagine new ways to design jewellery with stones.  \nThe aim of the course is to create designs that begin with the stone as the source of inspiration. How best can you show all off the qualities of your stone?  \nFirstly we begin with the bare fundamentals of traditional stone setting. Once you understand how to create simple\, reliable settings using conventional techniques\, you can then adapt these processes to truly honour the spirit of your gemstones.  \nSince the stone becomes the focus\, then we are free to explore design and technique in equal measure. \nThis course is presented in 3 projects that explore a range of techniques you can employ for creative stone setting.  \n\nExplore setting techniques that use claws. Make a traditional claw setting to understand the principles. Then deconstruct and reconstruct the setting to explore the necessary elements that keep your gemstone secure.\nWork with wax to create a setting for a large stone (pendant or ring).\nUse the delft sand casting technique to set a stone directly into molten metal (pendant or ring).\n\n\nExtension Project – Use your project results to create a unique pair of earrings with an experimental stone setting.\n\n Book Now\nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester \nMax student numbers: 10 students  \nCourse Dates: 19 Sept – 21 Nov 2017 \nClass Times: Tuesday evenings\, 6.15 – 9.15 pm \nCourse Fee:  Standard: £260 / Concessions: £225 / Tuesday Extra £430 \nMaterials Kit : Basic materials are included. \n  \n Book Now

SUMMARY:Flux One Year Advanced Certificate in Jewellery
DESCRIPTION:Take your jewellery design and jewellery making skills to a professional level with the Flux Advanced Certificate in Jewellery.\nBook now\n– Do you already have a good range of jewellery making skills Do you want to take a more professional approach to your jewellery practice? If so\, the Flux one year\, part time Advanced Certificate in Jewellery is for you. On this one year jewellery course we present a rich and varied programme of study to further enrich your jewellery practice. We put the focus firmly on your personal development\, and you’ll be assigned a tutor at the start of the programme. This connection provides us all with a clear avenue for communication. It also ensures that you get the very best experience of  learning during your time here. \nWe have put together a combination of weekend and evening study which we feel are especially relevant to your needs. The core of your learning is delivered through the Tuesday evening sessions that run through the academic year. Additionally these classes provide you with regular weekly contact with your tutor. Then to complement your skills we have selected a series of short specialist courses. Here we introduce new techniques to further enrich your skills development. \nHow will my learning be structured?\nBetween September and July you will have attended three 10 week evening courses and 4 specialist weekend courses. Additionally\, across the year you will have 3 enriching personal development days with your tutor. You’ll spend an additional weekend at Flux for your exhibition and in total this amounts to more than 180 hours of workshop time. With a maximum ratio of 1 tutor to 6 students this means we can provide the input you need to keep developing to the highest level. To gain the Flux Advanced Certificate in Jewellery you will need to attend all sessions. (flexibility around dates can be arranged but please discuss this with us in advance). You can see the full timetable at the bottom of this page. \nWhat will I learn?\nBy the end of this course you will have expanded your knowledge and technical skills to raise your jewellery activities to a professional level.  We aim to invigorate every aspect of your practice\, with focus given to creative development\, technical know-how and business skills too.  \nAs we have a strong interest in your creative development\, the projects we set always begin with the experimental. We want to you break through and above the conventional\, and thus produce work with originality and flair. \nAt this level we need to consider production methods and pricing strategies alongside creative ideas and we will support these elements through assignments\, project work and study days. \nWhich techniques will I explore?\nStone setting – we present opportunities for you to explore all aspects of setting. From fine jewellery setting techniques (bead\, pave\, claw) to the more experimental (wax\, delft\, mixed techs)\, which suits you? Experiment too with encapsulation to ‘set’ other materials and objects into your jewellery. \nGemmology – Learn the basics of pearl grading\, and then try your hand at knotting to create a string of pearls. Learn how to distinguish gemstones using high and low tech methods. In addition\, you will learn about the various working properties of a range of stones. This knowledge is invaluable when considering setting styles for specific stones. Furthermore- and as an added bonus\, you will make a tension set ring using a semi-precious stone. \nCold Connections – we explore how to attach metal and other elements together. Especially relevant techniques include encapsulation\, riveting\, screws and tabs. \nForming – Try a range of forming techniques to give lightweight volume\, meanwhile creating hollow forms. How else can you take advantage of these design possibilities? You will explore small scale raising techniques\, as well as scoring and fold forming.  \nCasting and related processes – we examine a range of approaches to creating solid 3D form\, especially in relation to stone setting. Learn how to prepare a wax model for stone setting\, and try your hand at studio casting methods to encapsulate stones. \nDecorative techniques  – you’ll get to experiment with etching techniques for jewellery\, and hand engraving. Explore which of these best suits your making approach. Additionally\, you will experiment with small scale resin work and other methods of encapsulation.  \nCreative design – designing is of course integral  to your project work. Additionally\, we structure the Personal Development days to further support your jewellery design skills. On these occasions you will work with your tutor to develop a collection or series of collections that meet a specific brief.  \nBusiness skills – Who are you making your jewellery for? We present ways to explore audiences and find your niche market. Once identified\, we look at production techniques and strategies for pricing and marketing your work. \nWhat will I produce for the Flux Advanced Certificate in Jewellery?\nPhysical objects – Since your creative spirit knows no bounds we cannot precisely say what you will make during your year here\, but we can suggest you will produce at least: a pendant\, ring and earrings that explore stone settings\, a small\, formed vessel in copper or silver\, and a ring or brooch that encapsulates some precious item. You will also have made a string of pearls\, a tension set ring (or two)\, engraving plates and an etched pendants or a bangle. \nSketchbook work\, and notes – You will produce at least one sketchbook over the year. In your sketchbook you will record ideas\, technical problem solving\, sources of inspiration\, drawing and sketching exercises and design work. You may like to keep technical notes in your sketchbook too – or if you prefer you may have a separate notebook for these. \nTreasury of samples – We find that people best learn through experience\, so all your courses begin with experimentation. These experiments and tests form the basis of your own\, personal reference treasury – a visual\, tactile library of materials and techniques that you can use to develop future jewellery projects. How is this useful? Those periods of experimentation are aways followed by a project with a brief. In your project work your designs will be infused with influences from your tests\, also within the context of a brief. \nAn exhibition – At the end of the year\, as part of your final assessment\, you will present a selection of all of these outputs for exhibition. This normally exhibition normally falls in mid June\, as part of Camberwell Arts Festival.  \nWhat do I gain?\nIn addition to all of the products listed above\, you will be presented with the Flux Advanced Certificate in Jewellery. The certificate includes credits and evaluations for each module of learning that you have completed. These can be used to support the physical evidence of the skills you have implemented in your project work.  \nWhat next?\nTake flight!
