SUMMARY:Experimental Enamelling Techniques for Jewellery (EL04)
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Experimental Enamelling Techniques for Jewellery: Weekend Course.\n Book Now\nExplore a range of experimental enamelling techniques to give lasting colour and texture to your jewellery. \nWhat will I learn?\nThis is a dynamic 2 day course where you will have lots of scope to experiment with enamelling techniques on a range of materials. You will learn to sift powdered enamels onto copper sheet. You can try blending colours\, you can use stencils to give definition\, and you can draw through it to produce unique patterns and textures. Using pre-enamelled steel sheet you will then have the opportunity to use liquid vitreous enamels to paint or draw with colour. \nThe course draws focus to the process of experimentation and through hands-on experience you will gain sound knowledge of this complex but rewarding material. \nEnamelling is not difficult to learn\, but it is an unpredictable and therefore exciting process. This course will teach the basic technical aspects of the craft\, alongside the associated health and safety issues related to the use of enamel powders and liquids. We will first learn how to obtain a well-fused enamel surface\, and then through guided experimentation we will explore mark making techniques on copper and steel\, and on the second day we will develop a finished piece of jewellery using cold connection techniques. \nWhat will I produce?\nYou’ll produce a range of test pieces that reflect your personal interests\, style or aesthetic. We anticipate that your samples will provide lasting reference -and inspiration- for your future jewellery projects. \nOn the second day there will also be opportunity to devise suitable cold connections that will enable you to create a wearable item from your favourite test piece. \nMaterials \nThe course fee covers the cost of all materials. Metals available for your use include copper and enamelled steel. A selected palette of powder vitreous enamels will also be provided. \nYou may also bring your own precious materials to work with\,; in this instance please note we recommend using fine silver rather than sterling silver for enamelling\, due to the inherent processes and behaviours of the materials involved. \nCan I get my work hallmarked?\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux – If you  would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price. \nTea\, coffee and light refreshments are provided throughout the weekend. \n Book Now\nCourse Tutor: Katherine Brunacci. An additional tutor will be on hand if more than 6 students enrol for this course \nMax Student numbers: 6 to 12 (with 2 tutors) \nCourse Dates: Sat 9 to Sun 10 February 2019 \nClass Times: 10.00am – 5pm \nCourse Fee: \nInternational/Full fee £350 \nUK residents £225 \n*Concessions £195 \n*If you are a UK residents and on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. This is a discretionary discount which we personally subsidise. Please consider how much you need this discount before choosing the concessionary option. \n \nCourse code: EL04 \n Book Now

SUMMARY:Wax Carving for Casting Silver Jewellery (C32)
DESCRIPTION:Wax Carving for Casting Silver Jewellery (Evening\, Thu).\nBook Now\n– On this 10 week jewellery course you will learn a range of the wax carving techniques we commonly use to create models for casting in silver or other metals. \nWe’ll introduce you to the practical issues of measuring and marking\, and of cutting\, shaping and polishing wax objects\, ready for casting. We’ll also explain about the relative weights of materials you are likely to use. In the process you’ll learn how to reduce the weight without compromising the visual impact of your design. \nSize\, dimension and the choice of metal affects the weight – and cost – of your final outcome. Since objects cast from wax can be heavy (and thus\, expensive) we’ll also talk about plating processes for jewellery. For example\, choosing to cast in bronze and then gold plating your design is more cost effective than having your wax design cast in solid gold. \nYou will experience first hand the differences between types of waxes commonly used for making wax models\, through a series of set projects: \n\n Wax carving: design and carve a ring in wax\nDesign and make an item suitable for batch production\n\nWe can take your wax models to the casters\, and your results can be cast in bronze\, brass\, silver or gold. \n(NOTE We will work out the likely cost in various metals beforehand\, so you you’ll know what to expect to pay.  You will need to pay this fee for your model to be cast up.) \nWhat will I learn?\nBy the end of this course you will know how to cut\, carve\, manipulate and polish wax to realise your designs. You will be able to prepare your items for professional lost wax casting. You’ll also have a good understanding of the constraints of the processes and materials involved. You should also understand how to make a prototype in wax that can be reproduced to make multiples of the same design. Additionally your design skills will have improved. You will  have an understanding of how to create good wax designs for the casting process. \nBook Now\nCourse Tutor:Becky Dockree  and Katherine Brunacci \nMax student numbers: 12 students with 2 tutors.  \nCourse Dates: 17 January – 21 March 2019.  \nClass Times: Thursday evenings\, 6.15pm – 9.15pm \nCourse Fee:  Standard fee £260 / *Concessions £235 \n*f you are on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. This is a discretionary discount which we personally subsidise. Please consider how much you need this discount before choosing the concessionary option. \nNo half term break \nMaterials kit : included (extra casting charges will be applicable\, according to your design) \nCourse code: C32 \nBook Now

SUMMARY:Advanced Jewellery Making - Bead Setting and Pave (PB04)
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Jewellery Making – bead setting and pave: Weekend Course.\nBook Now\n-This course offers an introduction to bead setting and pave setting for gem-studded jewellery. Both these stone setting styles are advanced stone setting techniques that we frequently use in fine jewellery making. \nWhat will I learn?\nThese fine stone setting techniques require a high degree of precision in metal preparation and in procedure. Over 2 days you will be guided through the steps for successful setting\, and you’ll have time for extensive practice using a variety of cuts and styles. \nOnce introduced to these techniques you can explore their endless possibilities and apply them to your making and design process. Not restricted by the common cuts of gems you will discover new freedom in creating visually more complex jewellery. \nBoth techniques require the use of a graver to raise a grain and to fine-cut around your setting; keeping your graver sharp is an essential requirement for success and so we will also cover both the preparation of your tool and how to sharpen it. \nWhat will I produce?\nWe anticipate you will produce a series of stone settings that show progressive skill and accuracy in your application of the techniques. We encourage you to use non precious metals and cz stones for your practice\, and when your confidence is sufficient you can explore working with more precious materials. \nMaterials\nThe course fee covers the cost of all materials. Metals available for your use include brass\, copper and gilding metal. \nIf you do want to work with silver you may also bring your own precious materials to work with. \nCan I get my work hallmarked?\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you  would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price \nWe’ll provide you with tea\, coffee and light refreshments throughout the weekend. SUMMARY:Decorative Hand Engraving (HE03)
DESCRIPTION:Decorative Hand Engraving for jewellers and silversmiths: Weekend Course.\nBook Now\nDo you like to draw? Are you passionate about fonts? Jewellery often requires surface detail to be revealed\, or a message\, a word or a symbol to be cut into it. On this course we introduce one of the oldest jewellery making techniques – decorative hand engraving. \nWhat will I learn?\nHand engraving requires the use of a hand held cutting tool\, known as a graver\, to cut grooves into metal in order to create a beautiful design. \nThe success of the cut depends as much on the sharpness of the tool as it does on the hand that holds it! With this in mind\, you will learn how to prepare\, sharpen and use a graver in order to create different decorative textures such as cross hatching\, dotting and frosting. \nOnce introduced to this technique you can explore its endless possibilities and apply it to your style. Hand engraving is an amazing skill to learn\, and you can apply it in so many different ways\, from simple to the most elaborate and intricate. \nWhat will I produce?\nIt is anticipated that you will produce a range of progressive practice pieces that also show your evolving skills in lettering\, line and pattern. \nMaterials\nThe course fee includes all tools and materials that you’ll need. We will provide you with copper sheet for practice pieces and samples\, and these are yours to keep. \nAt the end of the course you can also purchase the gravers you have used if you wish\, for an at-cost fee. \nCan I get my work hallmarked?\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you  would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price. \nWe’ll provide you with tea\, coffee and light refreshments throughout the weekend. SUMMARY:Perfect Pearls (PP2) - Pearl grading and pearl stringing workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn ways to identify different types of Pearl. Combine gemmology and pearl stringing: put your new knowledge straight into practice with an afternoon workshop session to make a knotted string of pearls.\nWould you know if your pearls were dyed or naturally coloured? What is the difference between a Keshi Pearl and a Baroque pearl?  What is the difference between an Akoya Pearl and a Tahitian Pearl? How do Freshwater Pearls differ from the saltwater variety?  These little shell-fish gems have been favoured treasures since the earliest times; still they captivate us with their lustrous beauty. Have you ever fancied trying your hand at pearl stringing? Join us for a pearl grading workshop\, and make your own knotted string of pearls to wear home. \nOn this one day course you’ll have an opportunity to view a wide range of pearls of various type\, size\, colour and quality. We’ll introduce simple methods for basic identification\, and we’ll look beneath the surface of a sample of pearls to understand their structure. Pearls are organic ‘gemstones’. Although quite resilient\, they are sensitive to chemicals and to general wear and tear; we will discuss  how to take care of them. \nWe want you to make use of this knowledge\, so the class begins with a morning gemmology session followed by an afternoon of practical workshop activity to make your own string of pearls using traditional knotting techniques\, using silk and gimp. \nHow will this workshop help you?\nWhen it comes to making jewellery with gems and gem-like natural materials like pearl and amber\, it’s crucial to know a little bit about the qualities of these materials.
