How would you choose to wear it? Your stone of choice is most beautiful to see when the jewellery element has been well designed to best show the gem. On this 10 week jewellery course we explore ways to combine stone setting and design techniques to make magic! \nWhat will I learn?\nThe course is presented in 2 projects that develop technical skills while also encouraging experimentation and design development. \nTo begin\, you’ll get to choose a gemstone from our selection. This will then be the source of inspiration for your designs. \n\nProject 1 – Choose a semi-precious gemstone. Then design and make a necklace (or ring) that incorporates your gemstone.\n\n\nProject 2 – Design and make a bracelet or earrings to match.\n\nIs this course for me?\nWhether you’re exploring jewellery for the first time\, or a seasoned pro\, we structure our Wednesday evening courses to suit all levels of jewellery making skill.  \nBeginners: By the end of this course you will know how to \n\nSet your gemstone of choice\, using the rub-over  technique. Design a piece of jewellery that highlights your gemstone. Cut\, shape\, texturise\, form\, file and polish metals like copper and silver. Permanently join 2 or more elements together using traditional silver soldering techniques. Meanwhile\, you will have designed and made 2 pieces of jewellery with gemstones\, that work together as a set.\n\nAdvanced: You may wish to use this term’s theme to further enrich your own skillset. In this case we encourage independent project work. So\, complementary to the above\, you will have the opportunity to \n\nClaw-set your gemstone of choice\, and forge a bar or form a sheet of your preferred metal (copper\, silver\, gold) to best match your jewellery design.\n\nBook Now\nCourse code: G35 \nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester \nMax student numbers:  12 students  \nSuitable for: All levels of skill\, beginners to advanced. \nCourse Dates: 15 January – 25 March 2020 \nHalf term break – week of 17-21 Feb \nClass Times: Wednesday evenings\, 6.15 – 9.15pm \nCourse Fee:  £295  \nMaterials Kit : Basic materials are included. \n \n

SUMMARY:Advanced Jewellery Making - Bead Setting and Pave (PB04)
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Jewellery Making – bead setting and pave: Weekend Course.\nBook Now\n-This course offers an introduction to bead setting and pave setting for gem-studded jewellery. Both these stone setting styles are advanced stone setting techniques that we frequently use in fine jewellery making. \nWhat will I learn?\nThese fine stone setting techniques require a high degree of precision in metal preparation and in procedure. Over 2 days you will be guided through the steps for successful setting\, and you’ll have time for extensive practice using a variety of cuts and styles. \nOnce introduced to these techniques you can explore their endless possibilities and apply them to your making and design process. Not restricted by the common cuts of gems you will discover new freedom in creating visually more complex jewellery. \nBoth techniques require the use of a graver to raise a grain and to fine-cut around your setting; keeping your graver sharp is an essential requirement for success and so we will also cover both the preparation of your tool and how to sharpen it. \nWhat will I produce?\nWe anticipate you will produce a series of stone settings that show progressive skill and accuracy in your application of the techniques. We encourage you to use non precious metals and cz stones for your practice\, and when your confidence is sufficient you can explore working with more precious materials. \nMaterials\nThe course fee covers the cost of all materials. Metals available for your use include brass\, copper and gilding metal. \nIf you do want to work with silver you may also bring your own precious materials to work with. \nCan I get my work hallmarked?\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you  would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price \nWe’ll provide you with tea\, coffee and light refreshments throughout the weekend. You’ll need to bring some lunch. \nBook Now\nCourse Tutor: Elena Timbaliuc. An additional tutor will assist if more than 7 students enrol for this course \nStudent numbers: 6 to 10 \nCourse Date:  Sat 2 June to Sun 3 June 2018 \nClass Times: 10.00am – 5pm daily \nCourse fee: \nFull fee £225 \n*Concessions £200 \n* If you are on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. SUMMARY:Jewellery Inlay Techniques with Crushed Stone (CS04)
DESCRIPTION:Jewellery Inlay Techniques with Crushed Stone: Weekend Course: 2 Days (Sat-Sun).\nBook Now\nThis weekend course introduces students to the exciting art of inlaying crushed stones into silver collets of various shapes to add colour\, texture and vibrance to your jewellery. \nTraditional in Central and South America\, this jewellery inlay technique will allow you to create beautiful silver jewellery with rich and intense colour. \nThis process is an add-on technique for students with  intermediate to advanced silver jewellery making skills. \nWhat will I learn?\nWe begin with a rounded discussion about appropriate stones for this technique of crushed stone inlay. Some semi-precious stones are particularly hazardous in dust form. You will learn about different stones in their rough forms and you will be guided to select appropriate materials for use in your work.  You’ll  then prepare your own stone dust and mixture of colours for use over the 2 days. \nYou will then learn how to inlay the stones into a silver pendant that you have designed and prepared. \nAfter creating your silver pendant by combining soldering and folding techniques. \nOnce introduced to this technique you can explore its endless possibilities and apply it to your making and design process. Not restricted by the common cuts of gems you will discover new freedom in creating visually more complex jewellery. \nWhat will I produce?\nWe anticipate that you will produce a piece of jewellery made up of a series of collets that you will fill with crushed stone inlay. Depending on the complexity of your design\, you may also have time to produce additional items that explore the technique further. \nMaterials\nThe course fee covers the cost of stone materials for crushing\, and for non – precious materials\,. You will also be provided with silver to make your pendant. DESCRIPTION:Learn ways to identify translucent and pastel shades of gemstones. Combine gemmology and stone setting: put your new knowledge straight into practice with an afternoon workshop session to set your favourite stone into a ring.\nWould you know if your ring holds a Diamond or a White Sapphire? A Topaz or Quartz? Did you know you can identify a Diamond with only a pen to aid you?  Do you know your Morganite from your Kunzite?  Can you tell the difference between  coloured CZ and any of these other stones??  Are you ready to learn some gemmology and stone setting techniques? \nOn this one day course you’ll have an opportunity to use a range of professional gemstone identification equipment. Gemstone characteristics\, like hardness\, brittleness\, heat resistance\, porosity and cleavage are all important qualities that affect your choice of stone when designing jewellery. Additionally\, when buying a stone\, you need to know how to assess the quality of the stones on offer. \nAt each session in our gemmology series we discuss the individual characteristics and behaviours of the particular stones\, to help you become better designers – and better stone setters too. \nWe’ve grouped our range of gemstones according to similar hues\, to better help you understand the differences between similar stones. Choose a workshop according to your preferred colour palette – or join up for the full bonanza 5 Saturdays! \nWhat will you gain?\nAs well as gaining a range of great methods to identify the type and quality of your gemstones\, you will get the chance to set your stone type of choice at the workshop\, to wear home. Make a tension set ring using silver and your favourite stone of the day. \n(*If you’ve already made a tension setting with us you can choose another method of stone setting) \nMorning Gemmology Schedule:\nMorning Schedule: Gemmology – Learn to identify between a range of translucent stones from ‘white’ to pale blues\, greens pinks and yellows such as: Diamond\, Cubic Zirconia\, Topaz\, Sapphire\, Morganite\, Kunzite\, Quartz. \nAfternoon Stone Setting schedule: \nHow to make a Tension-set silver ring. \nChoose a suitable stone from our selection of semi-precious  translucent/pastel stones\, make a silver ring and tension set your stone into it. SUMMARY:Flux One Year Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery
DESCRIPTION:Extend your jewellery design and jewellery making skills with the Flux one year\, part time Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery Making.\nBook now\n– While strengthening your core jewellery making skills\, the Flux Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery gives impetus for your creativity to flourish. The programme of modules for this one year\, part time course will raise your existing skills\, meanwhile broadening your repertoire to include more complex techniques. This provides inspiration for your creative ideas\, also sharpening your problem solving skills.  \nWe put the focus firmly on your personal development\, and you’ll be assigned a tutor at the start of the programme.  This connection provides us all with a clear avenue for communication. It also ensures that you get the very best experience of  learning during your time here. \nWe have put together a combination of weekend and evening study which we have selected from our full range of courses. The core of your learning is delivered through the Thursday evening sessions that run through the academic year. Additionally these classes provide you with regular weekly contact with your tutor. Then to complement your skills we have selected a series of short specialist courses. Here we introduce new techniques to further enrich your skills and creative development. \nHow will my learning be structured?\nBetween September and July you will have attended three 10 week evening courses and  4 specialist weekend courses. Additionally\, across the year you will have 3 enriching personal development days with your tutor. You’ll spend an additional weekend at Flux for your exhibition and in total this amounts to more than 180 hours of workshop time. With a maximum ratio of 1 tutor to 6 students this means we can provide the input you need to keep developing to the highest level. To gain the Flux Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery you will need to attend all sessions. (flexibility around dates can be arranged but please discuss this with us in advance). You can see the full timetable at the bottom of this page. \nWhat will I learn?\nBy the end of this course you will have extended your jewellery making repertoire to include a range of more complex techniques in jewellery making. Having a broad knowledge – and experience – of\, for example\, stone setting\, this gives new perspective to your jewellery designing and problem solving challenges. Meanwhile\, through your project work you will further embed and hone those core skills that underpin every jeweller’s practice.  \nWe have a strong interest in your creative development and we will support your creative and  jewellery design skills through assignments\, project work and study days. However\, fabulously creative ideas need to be achievable. Therefore your creative development will be grounded through application. We have planned every project to give you new insight into the possibilities – and limitations – of process and material. \nWhich techniques will I explore?\nConnections – When it comes to making flawless jewellery\, good silver soldering skills are key\, and you’ll have the opportunity to really hone those skills on the soldering masterclass. \nCasting and related processes – we examine a range of approaches to creating solid 3D form. You will explore studio casting techniques including cuttlefish casting and delft casting. Additionally we introduce wax carving as a means for making a model for the lost wax casting process. Learn how to design for one- off jewellery items\, or develop a wax original for mass production. \nDecorative techniques  – Enamelling and etching are on the menu for you this year. Quite diverse in appearance\, these techniques can however be used together to great effect. \nStone setting – you will make tension\, claw and flush setting samples\, as well as settings for more complex or irregular gemstone shapes. Also\, you’ll get to explore ways to make use of broken or unwanted beads and stones using the crushed stone inlay technique. \nDesigning for silver jewellery – designing is of course integral  to your project work. Additionally\, we structure the Personal Development days to further support your jewellery design skills. On these occasions you will work with your tutor to develop research methods and drawing skills\, sketches and presentation skills\, and design ideas that will feed your creative output.  \nWhat will I produce for the Flux Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery?\nPhysical objects – Since your creative spirit knows no bounds we cannot precisely say what you will make during your year here\, but we can suggest you will produce a minimum of: 3 silver rings\, 2 hollow formed pendants and a small lidded box\, and a charm and a ring each with a stone setting. You will also have made earrings with silver and keum boo\, enamelled pendants and maybe some tags\, delft-cast charms\, cuttlefish-cast objects\, and you will have made a brooch that incorporates metal and textiles. \nSketchbook work\, and notes – You will produce at least one sketchbook over the year. In your sketchbook you will record ideas\, technical problem solving\, sources of inspiration\, drawing and sketching exercises and design work. You may like to keep technical notes in your sketchbook too – or if you prefer you may have a separate notebook for these. \nTreasury of samples – We find that people best learn through experience\, so all your courses begin with experimentation. These experiments and tests form the basis of your own\, personal reference treasury – a visual\, tactile library of materials and techniques that you can use to develop future jewellery projects. How is this useful? Those periods of experimentation are aways followed by a project with a brief. As your skills develop you will gain progressively more freedom to explore your own design ideas\, informed by your tests\, and within the context of a brief. \nAn exhibition – At the end of the year\, as part of your final assessment\, you will present a selection of all of these outputs for exhibition. SUMMARY:Flux One Year Foundation Certificate in Jewellery
DESCRIPTION:Develop your jewellery design and jewellery making skills with the Flux accredited one year part time jewellery course.\nBook now\n– On this one year part time jewellery course we present a rich and varied programme of study for you to develop solid foundation skills in jewellery design and  jewellery making. It’s perfect for you if you have an interest in learning to design and make jewellery\, and you want to work with silver and other precious materials. We put the focus firmly on your personal development\, and you’ll be assigned a tutor at the start of the programme.  This connection with your tutor provides us all with a clear avenue for communication. It also ensures that you get the very best experience of  learning during your time here. \nWe have put together a combination of weekend and evening study which we have selected from our full range of courses. The core of your learning is delivered through the wednesday evening sessions that run through the academic year. Additionally these classes provide you with regular weekly contact with your tutor. Then to complement your skills we have selected a series of short specialist courses. Here we introduce new techniques to further enrich your skills development. \nHow will my learning be structured?\nThis is a one year part time jewellery course. Between September and July you will have attended three 10 week evening courses and  4 specialist weekend courses that focus on delivering the skills you need to design and make jewellery. To gain the Flux One Year Foundation Certificate in Jewellery you will need to attend all sessions. (flexibility around dates can be arranged but please discuss this with us in advance). You can see the full timetable at the bottom of this page. \nWhat will I learn?\nBy the end of this course you will have developed the core skills that underpin every jeweller’s practice. These fundamental skills include measuring\, cutting\, filing\, drilling\, bending\, soldering and polishing. It’s especially important to develop these skills and you will have extensive practice through your project work. The projects we set usually give you opportunity to explore design as well as technique and material\, and by the end of the course you will be able to design and make jewellery with confidence. \nWe have a strong interest in your creative development and we will support your jewellery design skills through assignments\, project work and study days. However\, fabulously creative ideas need to be achievable. Therefore your creative development will be grounded through application. We have planned every project to give you new insight into the possibilities – and limitations – of process and material. \nWhich techniques will I explore?\nConnections – we explore how to attach metal and other elements together\, and techniques include silver soldering\, setting\, riveting\, using tabs. \nForming – how do we shape metal to create light 3D form? We introduce common forming techniques for working with sheet metal\, including doming\, folding\, bending\, forging. \nCasting and related processes – we examine a range of approaches to creating solid 3D form. You will explore studio casting techniques including cuttlefish casting and delft casting. We’ll also discuss methods for one-off and limited edition production. \nDecorative techniques  – you’ll get to experiment with keum boo\, enamelling\, textures and simple patination techniques. furthermore you will explore ways to integrate other media into your jewellery. \nStone setting – How do we permanently attach gemstones to our jewellery? We present a series of product-based projects that explore the rub-over stone setting technique. \nWhat will I produce for the Flux Foundation Certificate in Jewellery?\nPhysical objects – Since your creative spirit knows no bounds we cannot precisely say what you will make during your year here\, but we can suggest you will produce a minimum of: 3 silver rings\, 2 hollow formed pendants and a small lidded box\, and a charm and a ring each with a stone setting. This normally exhibition normally falls in mid June\, as part of Camberwell Arts Festival.  \nWhat do I gain?\n In addition to all of the products listed above\, you will be presented with the Flux One Year Foundation Certificate in Jewellery. The certificate includes credits and evaluations for each module of learning that you have completed. These can be used to support the physical evidence of the skills you have implemented in your project work. And of course you will have gained solid foundation skills  that will enable you to to design and make jewellery. \nWhat next?\nTake the Flux One Year Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery to extend your skills\, or use your products and supporting evidence to gain for work in the jewellery trade. Subsequently\, there is the option to take the Flux Advanced Certificate in Jewellery. \nCourse Fees\nThe fee for the Flux one year\, part time Foundation Certificate in Jewellery is £2850. SUMMARY:Experimental stone setting techniques - Delft\, Claw and Wax (B28)
DESCRIPTION:Explore experimental and conventional approaches to stone setting. Combine traditional and experimental techniques to produce unusual\, stone-set jewellery. (Evenings\, Tuesdays).\n Book Now\n– On this jewellery course we explore traditional and experimental stone setting techniques in order to re-imagine new ways to design jewellery with stones.  \nThe aim of the course is to create designs that begin with the stone as the source of inspiration. How best can you show all off the qualities of your stone?  \nFirstly we begin with the bare fundamentals of traditional stone setting. Once you understand how to create simple\, reliable settings using conventional techniques\, you can then adapt these processes to truly honour the spirit of your gemstones.  \nSince the stone becomes the focus\, then we are free to explore design and technique in equal measure. \nThis course is presented in 3 projects that explore a range of techniques you can employ for creative stone setting.  \n\nExplore setting techniques that use claws. Make a traditional claw setting to understand the principles. Then deconstruct and reconstruct the setting to explore the necessary elements that keep your gemstone secure.\nWork with wax to create a setting for a large stone (pendant or ring).\nUse the delft sand casting technique to set a stone directly into molten metal (pendant or ring).\n\n\nExtension Project – Use your project results to create a unique pair of earrings with an experimental stone setting.\n\n Book Now\nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester \nMax student numbers: 10 students  \nCourse Dates: 19 Sept – 21 Nov 2017 \nClass Times: Tuesday evenings\, 6.15 – 9.15 pm \nCourse Fee:  Standard: £260 / Concessions: £225 / Tuesday Extra £430 \nMaterials Kit : Basic materials are included. \n  \n Book Now
