SUMMARY:Etching Techniques for Jewellery (A33)
DESCRIPTION:Explore ways to add texture to your jewellery using etching techniques. Learn how to apply mordants and resists  to create interesting surface decoration on a variety of metals. (Morning\, Tuesdays).\n Book Now\n\n– Etching is an especially effective technique to add pattern\, line and texture to your jewellery\, and on this course we introduce you to a range of approaches that are particular to jewellery applications. \nTraditionally\, etching is used by printmakers as a process for making repeatable prints on paper. However\, when we apply the technique\, our focus is directly on mark-making to enhance the surface of metal. Taking a print from your finished pieces would be the real icing on the cake!  \nYou’ll learn all about the pros and cons of various mordants and resists\, and the associated health and safety issues relating to their usage. \nWhat will I learn?\nYou’ll gain invaluable experience using traditional mordant / resist applications used in etching (Acids to dissolve the metal\, varnishes\, stencils\, tapes to stop out the surface). You’ll also experiment with a form of photo etching\, where a photographic image can be etched onto metal plate.  We’ll cover electro etching too – this is a relatively safe method for etching non precious metals at home.. \nFinally\, we’ll discuss how to add colour using cold enamels\, oxides and other patinas. \nWhat will I produce?\nYou’ll produce a range of test pieces that explore the various approaches to etching\, also reflecting your personal aesthetic. We anticipate that your samples will provide lasting reference -and inspiration- for your future jewellery projects. \nIt’s likely that you will produce several finished pieces of jewellery during the course. Alternatively you may wish to concentrate on producing as many exploratory samples as possible for your future jewellery projects. \nMaterials\nThe course fee covers the cost of your materials for initial experiments. If you are working on larger pieces for your personal projects we can supply the metal for you at cost. \nIf you’d like to work with precious metals you may also bring your own supply to work with. \nHallmarking\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you  would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark we can arrange this at cost price. \nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester and Becky Dockree \nMax student numbers: 10 students  \nCourse Dates: 23 April – 2 July 2019. (Half term: 28 May – 1 June) \nClass Times: Tuesday mornings\, 10am – 1pm \nCourse Fee:  Standard: £260 / *Concessions: £235 / Tuesday Extra £470 \n*if you are on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. This is a discretionary discount which we personally subsidise. Please consider how much you need this discount before choosing the concessionary option. \nMaterials Kit : Basic materials are included. \nWould you like to stay for the day? We also offer a Tuesday Extra package that gives you 4 hours of follow on time in the studio to work on your own projects. Read more here \n Book Now\nCourse code A33 \n \nGeneral information about our Advanced courses:\nThese advanced jewellery courses are designed to assist you on an one-to-one basis\, by providing the tutoring\, tools and equipment required to achieve your personal objectives. You will have the opportunity to improve existing skills\, meanwhile also developing new skills by exploring new techniques. As the course progresses you can end up producing rings\, bangles and brooches\, experimental jewellery\, art pieces etc. In addition\, throughout these courses we introduce a new theme or technique to the group\, to stimulate new ways of working.

SUMMARY:Make an integrated clasp for a Necklace - Box clasps to Toggles and Bayonet (A32)
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make a range of effective clasps for jewellery. Design and make your own integrated clasp for  a necklace. (Mornings\, Tue)\n Book Now\n– Are you frustrated by the clasps that are commercially available to us for our jewellery designs? Nothing lets your work down more gracelessly than the ugly and fiddle-some lobster catch! So\, for this term’s course we are going old school as we explore how to design and make our own clasps for necklaces. Whether you favour box clasps\, toggles or bayonets\, the focus here is on making a visually integrated clasp that adds a beautiful element to your jewellery design while also providing secure attachment.  \nWhat will I learn?\nHow can we take advantage of gravitational forces to produce effective joining mechanisms? What can we do to ensure elements fit together securely? How do toggles\, box clasps and bayonets work? \nOur first exploratory project aims to develop your technical skills while also encouraging experimentation and design development.  \nThe second project requires that you put your design and technical skills together to make a necklace having an integrated\, functioning clasp. \n\nProject 1 – Exploring solutions\, making samples. Make 3 effective clasps for a range of scenarios\nProject 2 – design and make a necklace with an integrated clasp\n\nWhat will I produce?\nYou’ll have sketchbook pages bursting with ideas that explore shape and functionality\, and a box full of quick tests in card and metal sheet. \nYou will also have made at least 2 well-executed sample clasps that have complex functionality\, eg box claps\, bayonet clasps\, screw-thread attachments\, keyhole clasps. \nYour final piece will be a necklace with a beautifully integrated clasp\, that will convince you never to by a lobster catch ever again! \nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester  \nMax student numbers: 10 students  \nCourse Dates: 15 January –  19 March 2019. (No Half term) \nClass Times: Tuesday mornings\, 10am – 1pm \nCourse Fee:  Standard: £260 / *Concessions: £235 / Tuesday Extra £470 \n*if you are on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. SUMMARY:Encapsulating techniques for jewellery: watch lenses and related cold connections (A30)
DESCRIPTION:Explore ways to give permanence to delicate objects in your jewellery. Encapsulation techniques using methods from resin to watch lenses for jewellery.\n Book Now\nOn this course we explore methods to add secondary and perhaps more delicate elements to your metal jewellery.  You’ll produce a range of tests that explore how to use tabs\, screws and rivets for joining rigid and flexible elements together. \nYou’ll also have the chance to experiment with watch lenses for jewellery purposes. Much like a picture frame\, lenses offer the opportunity to protect delicate materials while showing them to their best. You will get the chance to explore 3 types of lense that can protect\, magnify or allow movement beneath.  \nFinally we will look at the use of resins for small scale jewellery work\, to encapsulate precious materials.  \nWith the focus on encapsulation each project will also require the development of metalworking techniques. You can expect to make bezels\, frames and claw or tab settings for your designs. \n\nExplore ways to join rigid and flexible materials together using tabs\, screws and rivets.\nExperiment with lenses – design and make a pendant\, brooch or ring with an encapsulated precious element.\nGiving delicate objects permanence – tapes\, varnishes and resins.  \n\nBy the end of this course you will have produced a reference of samples that explore how you can incorporate delicate or non metalic elements into your jewellery.  \n Book Now\nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester \nMax student numbers: 10 students  \nCourse Dates: 17 April – 26 June 2018. SUMMARY:Flux One Year Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery
DESCRIPTION:Extend your jewellery design and jewellery making skills with the Flux one year\, part time Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery Making.\nBook now\n– While strengthening your core jewellery making skills\, the Flux Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery gives impetus for your creativity to flourish. The programme of modules for this one year\, part time course will raise your existing skills\, meanwhile broadening your repertoire to include more complex techniques. This provides inspiration for your creative ideas\, also sharpening your problem solving skills.  \nWe put the focus firmly on your personal development\, and you’ll be assigned a tutor at the start of the programme.  This connection provides us all with a clear avenue for communication. It also ensures that you get the very best experience of  learning during your time here. \nWe have put together a combination of weekend and evening study which we have selected from our full range of courses. The core of your learning is delivered through the Thursday evening sessions that run through the academic year. Additionally these classes provide you with regular weekly contact with your tutor. Then to complement your skills we have selected a series of short specialist courses. Here we introduce new techniques to further enrich your skills and creative development. \nHow will my learning be structured?\nBetween September and July you will have attended three 10 week evening courses and  4 specialist weekend courses. Additionally\, across the year you will have 3 enriching personal development days with your tutor. You’ll spend an additional weekend at Flux for your exhibition and in total this amounts to more than 180 hours of workshop time. With a maximum ratio of 1 tutor to 6 students this means we can provide the input you need to keep developing to the highest level. To gain the Flux Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery you will need to attend all sessions. (flexibility around dates can be arranged but please discuss this with us in advance). You can see the full timetable at the bottom of this page. \nWhat will I learn?\nBy the end of this course you will have extended your jewellery making repertoire to include a range of more complex techniques in jewellery making. Having a broad knowledge – and experience – of\, for example\, stone setting\, this gives new perspective to your jewellery designing and problem solving challenges. Meanwhile\, through your project work you will further embed and hone those core skills that underpin every jeweller’s practice.  \nWe have a strong interest in your creative development and we will support your creative and  jewellery design skills through assignments\, project work and study days. However\, fabulously creative ideas need to be achievable. Therefore your creative development will be grounded through application. We have planned every project to give you new insight into the possibilities – and limitations – of process and material. \nWhich techniques will I explore?\nConnections – When it comes to making flawless jewellery\, good silver soldering skills are key\, and you’ll have the opportunity to really hone those skills on the soldering masterclass. \nCasting and related processes – we examine a range of approaches to creating solid 3D form. You will explore studio casting techniques including cuttlefish casting and delft casting. Additionally we introduce wax carving as a means for making a model for the lost wax casting process. Learn how to design for one- off jewellery items\, or develop a wax original for mass production. \nDecorative techniques  – Enamelling and etching are on the menu for you this year. Quite diverse in appearance\, these techniques can however be used together to great effect. \nStone setting – you will make tension\, claw and flush setting samples\, as well as settings for more complex or irregular gemstone shapes. Also\, you’ll get to explore ways to make use of broken or unwanted beads and stones using the crushed stone inlay technique. \nDesigning for silver jewellery – designing is of course integral  to your project work. Additionally\, we structure the Personal Development days to further support your jewellery design skills. On these occasions you will work with your tutor to develop research methods and drawing skills\, sketches and presentation skills\, and design ideas that will feed your creative output.  \nWhat will I produce for the Flux Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery?\nPhysical objects – Since your creative spirit knows no bounds we cannot precisely say what you will make during your year here\, but we can suggest you will produce a minimum of: 3 silver rings\, 2 hollow formed pendants and a small lidded box\, and a charm and a ring each with a stone setting. You will also have made earrings with silver and keum boo\, enamelled pendants and maybe some tags\, delft-cast charms\, cuttlefish-cast objects\, and you will have made a brooch that incorporates metal and textiles. \nSketchbook work\, and notes – You will produce at least one sketchbook over the year. In your sketchbook you will record ideas\, technical problem solving\, sources of inspiration\, drawing and sketching exercises and design work. You may like to keep technical notes in your sketchbook too – or if you prefer you may have a separate notebook for these. \nTreasury of samples – We find that people best learn through experience\, so all your courses begin with experimentation. These experiments and tests form the basis of your own\, personal reference treasury – a visual\, tactile library of materials and techniques that you can use to develop future jewellery projects. How is this useful? Those periods of experimentation are aways followed by a project with a brief. As your skills develop you will gain progressively more freedom to explore your own design ideas\, informed by your tests\, and within the context of a brief. \nAn exhibition – At the end of the year\, as part of your final assessment\, you will present a selection of all of these outputs for exhibition. This normally exhibition normally falls in mid June\, as part of Camberwell Arts Festival.  \nWhat do I gain?\nIn addition to all of the products listed above\, you will be presented with the Flux Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery. The certificate includes credits and evaluations for each module of learning that you have completed. These can be used to support the physical evidence of the skills you have implemented in your project work.  \nWhat next?\nTake the Flux Advanced Certificate in Jewellery to raise your skills to a professional level\, or use your products and supporting evidence to gain for work in the jewellery trade. \nCourse Fees\nThe fee for the Flux Certificate One Year Course in Jewellery is £2850. You’ll spend an additional weekend at Flux for your exhibition and in total this amounts to more than 180 hours of workshop time. With a maximum ratio of 1 tutor to 6 students this means we can provide the input you need to keep developing to the highest level. To gain the Flux One Year Foundation Certificate in Jewellery you will need to attend all sessions. (flexibility around dates can be arranged but please discuss this with us in advance). You can see the full timetable at the bottom of this page. \nWhat will I learn?\nBy the end of this course you will have developed the core skills that underpin every jeweller’s practice. These fundamental skills include measuring\, cutting\, filing\, drilling\, bending\, soldering and polishing. It’s especially important to develop these skills and you will have extensive practice through your project work. The projects we set usually give you opportunity to explore design as well as technique and material\, and by the end of the course you will be able to design and make jewellery with confidence. \nWe have a strong interest in your creative development and we will support your jewellery design skills through assignments\, project work and study days. However\, fabulously creative ideas need to be achievable. Therefore your creative development will be grounded through application. We have planned every project to give you new insight into the possibilities – and limitations – of process and material. \nWhich techniques will I explore?\nConnections – we explore how to attach metal and other elements together\, and techniques include silver soldering\, setting\, riveting\, using tabs. \nForming – how do we shape metal to create light 3D form? We introduce common forming techniques for working with sheet metal\, including doming\, folding\, bending\, forging. \nCasting and related processes – we examine a range of approaches to creating solid 3D form. You will explore studio casting techniques including cuttlefish casting and delft casting. We’ll also discuss methods for one-off and limited edition production. \nDecorative techniques  – you’ll get to experiment with keum boo\, enamelling\, textures and simple patination techniques. furthermore you will explore ways to integrate other media into your jewellery. \nStone setting – How do we permanently attach gemstones to our jewellery? We present a series of product-based projects that explore the rub-over stone setting technique. \nWhat will I produce for the Flux Foundation Certificate in Jewellery?\nPhysical objects – Since your creative spirit knows no bounds we cannot precisely say what you will make during your year here\, but we can suggest you will produce a minimum of: 3 silver rings\, 2 hollow formed pendants and a small lidded box\, and a charm and a ring each with a stone setting. \nWhat do I gain?\n In addition to all of the products listed above\, you will be presented with the Flux One Year Foundation Certificate in Jewellery. The certificate includes credits and evaluations for each module of learning that you have completed. These can be used to support the physical evidence of the skills you have implemented in your project work. And of course you will have gained solid foundation skills  that will enable you to to design and make jewellery. \nWhat next?\nTake the Flux One Year Intermediate Certificate in Jewellery to extend your skills\, or use your products and supporting evidence to gain for work in the jewellery trade. Subsequently\, there is the option to take the Flux Advanced Certificate in Jewellery. \nCourse Fees\nThe fee for the Flux one year\, part time Foundation Certificate in Jewellery is £2850. SUMMARY:Experimental stone setting techniques - Delft\, Claw and Wax (A28)
DESCRIPTION:Explore experimental and conventional approaches to stone setting. Combine traditional and experimental techniques to produce unusual\, stone-set jewellery. (Mornings\, Tuesdays).\nBook Now\n– On this jewellery course we explore traditional and experimental stone setting techniques in order to re-imagine new ways to design jewellery with stones.  \nThe aim of the course is to create designs that begin with the stone as the source of inspiration. How best can you show all off the qualities of your stone?  \nFirstly we begin with the bare fundamentals of traditional stone setting. Once you understand how to create simple\, reliable settings using conventional techniques\, you can then adapt these processes to truly honour the spirit of your gemstones.  \nSince the stone becomes the focus\, then we are free to explore design and technique in equal measure. \nThis course is presented in 3 projects that explore a range of techniques you can employ for creative stone setting.  \n\nExplore setting techniques that use claws. Make a traditional claw setting to understand the principles. Then deconstruct and reconstruct the setting to explore the necessary elements that keep your gemstone secure.\nWork with wax to create a setting for a large stone (pendant or ring).\nUse the delft sand casting technique to set a stone directly into molten metal (pendant or ring).\n\n\nExtension Project – Use your project results to create a unique pair of earrings with an experimental stone setting.\n\n Book Now\nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester \nMax student numbers: 10 students  \nCourse Dates: 19 Sept – 21 Nov 2017 \nClass Times: Tuesday mornings\, 10am – 1pm \nCourse Fee:  Standard: £260 / Concessions: £225 / Tuesday Extra £430 \nMaterials Kit : Basic materials are included. \nWould you like to stay for the day?
