SUMMARY:Design Challenges for Silver Jewellery - Make a one-piece Brooch (OB01)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the key elements of brooch functionality. Experiment with alternative designs to existing solutions. Use limited tools to create a brooch from a single piece of metal. \nBook Now\n\n– What mechanisms do we use to make a brooch stay firmly on your clothes? We jewellers have an array of fixtures and fittings available for purchase\, that we normally solder (or glue ˚∆˚) to our designs. But many of these are downright ugly\, or ineffective\, and often not suitable. With a little ingenuity we can break away from tradition to find clever ways of designing that give subtle delight to the maker! Are you ready to take the challenge of the One-Piece Brooch? \nWhere’s the point?\nThe aim of the course is to design and make a unique brooch (which you will wear home) that is made from one piece of metal\, with no additions. No Solder\, no glue\, no rivets. \nWhich techniques are we left with? Initial experiments with card will set us in a direction\, but metal has an entirely unique set of characteristics that allow us to change size and shape with a single hammer blow. Drilling\, cutting\, filing forming and forging all take on new and challenging significance as we seek to make our brooch. \nDesign challenges for silver jewellery\nThis is a delightfully playful course that will instil beginners with founding design skills for jewellery. Additionally beginners will learn the core jewellery making techniques that we employ\, using our most essential tools. (Piercing saw\, drills\, files\, pliers\, hammers\, mallets\, stakes etc) \nFor more advanced students\, the one-piece brooch provides constraints that offer a fabulous way to re-invigorate your creative practice. Working with strict limitations can be conversely liberating as we are forced to push against these boundary walls in search of a satisfactory conclusion. And so we find ways to re-explore techniques\, expand our technical skills and think laterally.  \nWhat will I produce?\nIt’s anticipated that you will produce numerous exploratory ideas in card\, and at least one copper prototype brooch. Your final piece\, in silver\, will be a culmination of  your tests\, prototypes and developing ideas. \nThe course fee covers the cost of non-precious materials\, and you will also be provided with some silver to make your brooch. \n(note there is a limit to the size of sheet silver we can include\, but if you want to go bigger you can purchase additional precious metal to work with) \nIf you would like to have your brooch hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can also be arranged at cost price. \nMore info will be provided at the time of booking your place. \nThis fee includes all materials for your use. Refreshments will also be provided. \nPlease check your eligibility before choosing the concessionary option. \nBook Now\nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester. An additional tutor will assist if more than 7 students enrol for this course \nMax Student numbers: 7  \nWeekday Date:  Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March 2020 \nClass Times: 10.00am – 5pm \nCourse Fee: \nInternational/Full fee £350 \nUK residents £295 \n  \nCourse code: OB01\nBook Now\nOne Piece Brooches © V Forrester 2010 \n

SUMMARY:Make a Gem of a Jewel: Stone Setting and Design Techniques for Jewellery
DESCRIPTION:Gemstone to Jewellery Magic: Choose a stone\, explore ways to set it\, design and make a gem of a jewel – 10 Week Course (Evening\, Wed).\nBook Now\n\n– What is your favourite gemstone? How would you choose to wear it? Your stone of choice is most beautiful to see when the jewellery element has been well designed to best show the gem. On this 10 week jewellery course we explore ways to combine stone setting and design techniques to make magic! \nWhat will I learn?\nThe course is presented in 2 projects that develop technical skills while also encouraging experimentation and design development. \nTo begin\, you’ll get to choose a gemstone from our selection. This will then be the source of inspiration for your designs. \n\nProject 1 – Choose a semi-precious gemstone. Then design and make a necklace (or ring) that incorporates your gemstone.\n\n\nProject 2 – Design and make a bracelet or earrings to match.\n\nIs this course for me?\nWhether you’re exploring jewellery for the first time\, or a seasoned pro\, we structure our Wednesday evening courses to suit all levels of jewellery making skill.  \nBeginners: By the end of this course you will know how to \n\nSet your gemstone of choice\, using the rub-over  technique. Design a piece of jewellery that highlights your gemstone. Cut\, shape\, texturise\, form\, file and polish metals like copper and silver. Permanently join 2 or more elements together using traditional silver soldering techniques. Meanwhile\, you will have designed and made 2 pieces of jewellery with gemstones\, that work together as a set.\n\nAdvanced: You may wish to use this term’s theme to further enrich your own skillset. In this case we encourage independent project work. So\, complementary to the above\, you will have the opportunity to \n\nClaw-set your gemstone of choice\, and forge a bar or form a sheet of your preferred metal (copper\, silver\, gold) to best match your jewellery design.\n\nBook Now\nCourse code: G35 \nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester \nMax student numbers:  12 students  \nSuitable for: All levels of skill\, beginners to advanced. \nCourse Dates: 15 January – 25 March 2020 \nHalf term break – week of 17-21 Feb \nClass Times: Wednesday evenings\, 6.15 – 9.15pm \nCourse Fee:  £295  \nMaterials Kit : Basic materials are included. \n \n

SUMMARY:Etching Techniques for Jewellery (B33)
DESCRIPTION:Explore ways to add texture to your jewellery using etching techniques. Learn how to apply mordants and resists  to create interesting surface decoration on a variety of metals. (Evening\, Tuesdays).\n Book Now\n\n– Etching is an especially effective technique to add pattern\, line and texture to your jewellery\, and on this course we introduce you to a range of approaches that are particular to jewellery applications. \nTraditionally\, etching is used by printmakers as a process for making repeatable prints on paper. However\, when we apply the technique\, our focus is directly on mark-making to enhance the surface of metal. Taking a print from your finished pieces would be the real icing on the cake!  \nYou’ll learn all about the pros and cons of various mordants and resists\, and the associated health and safety issues relating to their usage. \nWhat will I learn?\nYou’ll gain invaluable experience using traditional mordant / resist applications used in etching (Acids to dissolve the metal\, varnishes\, stencils\, tapes to stop out the surface). You’ll also experiment with a form of photo etching\, where a photographic image can be etched onto metal plate.  We’ll cover electro etching too – this is a relatively safe method for etching non precious metals at home.. \nFinally\, we’ll discuss how to add colour using cold enamels\, oxides and other patinas. \nWhat will I produce?\nYou’ll produce a range of test pieces that explore the various approaches to etching\, also reflecting your personal aesthetic. We anticipate that your samples will provide lasting reference -and inspiration- for your future jewellery projects. \nIt’s likely that you will produce several finished pieces of jewellery during the course. Alternatively you may wish to concentrate on producing as many exploratory samples as possible for your future jewellery projects. \nMaterials\nThe course fee covers the cost of your materials for initial experiments. If you are working on larger pieces for your personal projects we can supply the metal for you at cost. \nIf you’d like to work with precious metals you may also bring your own supply to work with. \nHallmarking\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you  would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark we can arrange this at cost price. \nCourse Tutor: Vicky Forrester and Becky Dockree \nMax student numbers: 10 students  \nCourse Dates: 23 April – 2 July 2019. (Half term: 28 May – 1 June) \nClass Times: Tuesday evenings\, 6.15-9.15pm \nCourse Fee:  Standard: £260 / *Concessions: £235  \n*if you are on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. This is a discretionary discount which we personally subsidise. Please consider how much you need this discount before choosing the concessionary option. \nMaterials Kit : Basic materials are included. \n Book Now\nCourse code B33 \n \nGeneral information about our Advanced courses:\nThese advanced jewellery courses are designed to assist you on an one-to-one basis\, by providing the tutoring\, tools and equipment required to achieve your personal objectives. You will have the opportunity to improve existing skills\, meanwhile also developing new skills by exploring new techniques. As the course progresses you can end up producing rings\, bangles and brooches\, experimental jewellery\, art pieces etc. In addition\, throughout these courses we introduce a new theme or technique to the group\, to stimulate new ways of working.

SUMMARY:Beyond Metal - Interdisciplinary Craft Skills For Contemporary Jewellery Practice (TX04))
DESCRIPTION:Exploring ideas through mixed media; new fashioned jewellery-making for the curious. Weekend Course.\nBook Now\nJewellery is widely acknowledged as the earliest art form; our ancestors would fashion wood\, bone\, shell and stone into significant objects that they could wear or carry. On this course we aim to reconnect with this purest drive to create. Beyond metal\, without limitation we embrace all and any materials\, and all techniques as a means to make jewellery. This course draws upon interdisciplinary craft skills and mixed media with a view to creating unique contemporary jewellery objects. \nWith this as our base line we begin with no rules. We explore how we can borrow techniques across traditional craft disciplines to express our intentions. How can we incorporate the skill of the shoe maker\, the paper artist or the weaver into our craft? Can we make jewellery out of leather\, or a shoe out of copper? Is it possible to make 3 dimensions from the wordsmith’s art? Could we borrow the principles of corsetry to create a statement cuff? \nWith the focus on interdisciplinary techniques and mixed materials we also invite you to explore the meaning of jewellery\, and its message. Must it be beautiful? Does it need to be comfortable? Should it last forever? Is the message ‘no message‘? \nCome & be radical! Plant new seeds to enrich your creative practice. \nWhat will I learn?\nIn this weekend workshop you will have the opportunity to explore different metal and craft techniques to create a piece of mixed media jewellery unique & meaningful to you. Our aim is to draw on your existing skills and interests and so there is room to be led by who you are\, what you bring\, and what you wish to create. \nInto this mix of assets we will also introduce techniques traditional to metal\, such as riveting\, forming\, tab making & screw fixing.  \nIn transforming ideas into 3D form we’ll examine the characteristics of available materials (like resistance\, colourfastness\, water resistance\, stretch\, thickness\, composition\, stiffness). this knowledge will assist you to design unique structures – and appropriate connection methods- to create a jewellery item of substance. \nThis course gives a great opportunity to explore how to work with different materials in your jewellery making practice\, whether you are beginner or advanced. \nWhat will I produce?\nWe anticipate that you will produce a range of progressive test pieces that explore interdisciplinary techniques. These samples and experiments will provide lasting reference -and inspiration- for your contemporary jewellery practice. \nIn addition\, we encourage you to produce a wearable item that incorporates hard and soft materials\, by the end of the weekend. \nMaterials\nThe course fee covers the cost of all non-precious materials. Brass\, copper and aluminium will be provided for experimentation\, and additional materials (acrylic\, lace\, fabrics\, threads\, buttons\, paper\, etc) for inclusions will also be provided. \nYou are encouraged to bring your own fabrics/papers/materials for combining into your designs and tests. \nTea\, coffee and light refreshments are provided throughout the weekend. \nBook Now\nCourse Tutor:  Emma McGilchrist. An additional tutor will assist if more than 7 students enrol for this course \nStudent numbers: 6 to 12 (with 2 tutors) \nCourse Dates: Saturday 16 to Sunday 17 March  2019 \nClass Times: 10.00am – 5pm \nCourse Fee: \nInternational/Full fee £350 \nUK residents £225 \n*Concessions £195 \n*If you are a UK residents and on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. SUMMARY:Keum Boo for Jewellery (KB09)
DESCRIPTION:Keum Boo for Jewellery: 2 Day Course (Sat-Sun).\nBook Now\n\n– This short\, weekend jewellery making course introduces students to the art of keum boo: fusing fine gold foil (24ct) to a finished piece of sterling silver jewellery. \nThe ancient Korean technique of keum boo is both beautiful and cost effective\, and over the 2-day workshop we will also highlight additional techniques that can be applied to further enhance the contrast of colour and texture to produce highly individual pieces of jewellery. \nThe course fee covers the cost of all materials for an initial project. SUMMARY:Wax Carving for Casting Silver Jewellery (C32)
DESCRIPTION:Wax Carving for Casting Silver Jewellery (Evening\, Thu).\nBook Now\n– On this 10 week jewellery course you will learn a range of the wax carving techniques we commonly use to create models for casting in silver or other metals. \nWe’ll introduce you to the practical issues of measuring and marking\, and of cutting\, shaping and polishing wax objects\, ready for casting. We’ll also explain about the relative weights of materials you are likely to use. In the process you’ll learn how to reduce the weight without compromising the visual impact of your design. \nSize\, dimension and the choice of metal affects the weight – and cost – of your final outcome. Since objects cast from wax can be heavy (and thus\, expensive) we’ll also talk about plating processes for jewellery. For example\, choosing to cast in bronze and then gold plating your design is more cost effective than having your wax design cast in solid gold. \nYou will experience first hand the differences between types of waxes commonly used for making wax models\, through a series of set projects: \n\n Wax carving: design and carve a ring in wax\nDesign and make an item suitable for batch production\n\nWe can take your wax models to the casters\, and your results can be cast in bronze\, brass\, silver or gold. \n(NOTE We will work out the likely cost in various metals beforehand\, so you you’ll know what to expect to pay.  You will need to pay this fee for your model to be cast up.) \nWhat will I learn?\nBy the end of this course you will know how to cut\, carve\, manipulate and polish wax to realise your designs. You will be able to prepare your items for professional lost wax casting. You’ll also have a good understanding of the constraints of the processes and materials involved. You should also understand how to make a prototype in wax that can be reproduced to make multiples of the same design. Additionally your design skills will have improved. You will  have an understanding of how to create good wax designs for the casting process. \nBook Now\nCourse Tutor:Becky Dockree  and Katherine Brunacci \nMax student numbers: 12 students with 2 tutors.  \nCourse Dates: 17 January – 21 March 2019.  \nClass Times: Thursday evenings\, 6.15pm – 9.15pm \nCourse Fee:  Standard fee £260 / *Concessions £235 \n*f you are on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. SUMMARY:Advanced Jewellery Making - Bead Setting and Pave (PB04)
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Jewellery Making – bead setting and pave: Weekend Course.\nBook Now\n-This course offers an introduction to bead setting and pave setting for gem-studded jewellery. Both these stone setting styles are advanced stone setting techniques that we frequently use in fine jewellery making. \nWhat will I learn?\nThese fine stone setting techniques require a high degree of precision in metal preparation and in procedure. Over 2 days you will be guided through the steps for successful setting\, and you’ll have time for extensive practice using a variety of cuts and styles. \nOnce introduced to these techniques you can explore their endless possibilities and apply them to your making and design process. Not restricted by the common cuts of gems you will discover new freedom in creating visually more complex jewellery. \nBoth techniques require the use of a graver to raise a grain and to fine-cut around your setting; keeping your graver sharp is an essential requirement for success and so we will also cover both the preparation of your tool and how to sharpen it. \nWhat will I produce?\nWe anticipate you will produce a series of stone settings that show progressive skill and accuracy in your application of the techniques. We encourage you to use non precious metals and cz stones for your practice\, and when your confidence is sufficient you can explore working with more precious materials. \nMaterials\nThe course fee covers the cost of all materials. Metals available for your use include brass\, copper and gilding metal. \nIf you do want to work with silver you may also bring your own precious materials to work with. \nCan I get my work hallmarked?\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you  would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price \nWe’ll provide you with tea\, coffee and light refreshments throughout the weekend. SUMMARY:Jewellery Inlay Techniques with Crushed Stone (CS04)
DESCRIPTION:Jewellery Inlay Techniques with Crushed Stone: Weekend Course: 2 Days (Sat-Sun).\nBook Now\nThis weekend course introduces students to the exciting art of inlaying crushed stones into silver collets of various shapes to add colour\, texture and vibrance to your jewellery. \nTraditional in Central and South America\, this jewellery inlay technique will allow you to create beautiful silver jewellery with rich and intense colour. \nThis process is an add-on technique for students with  intermediate to advanced silver jewellery making skills. \nWhat will I learn?\nWe begin with a rounded discussion about appropriate stones for this technique of crushed stone inlay. Some semi-precious stones are particularly hazardous in dust form. You will learn about different stones in their rough forms and you will be guided to select appropriate materials for use in your work.  You’ll  then prepare your own stone dust and mixture of colours for use over the 2 days. \nYou will then learn how to inlay the stones into a silver pendant that you have designed and prepared. \nAfter creating your silver pendant by combining soldering and folding techniques. \nOnce introduced to this technique you can explore its endless possibilities and apply it to your making and design process. Not restricted by the common cuts of gems you will discover new freedom in creating visually more complex jewellery. \nWhat will I produce?\nWe anticipate that you will produce a piece of jewellery made up of a series of collets that you will fill with crushed stone inlay. Depending on the complexity of your design\, you may also have time to produce additional items that explore the technique further. \nMaterials\nThe course fee covers the cost of stone materials for crushing\, and for non – precious materials\,. You will also be provided with silver to make your pendant. If you wish to make additional pieces in silver you may bring your own stock\, or we can advise on the purchase of extra materials. \nCan I get my work hallmarked?\nWe are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux. So if you would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price. \nWe’ll provide you with tea\, coffee and light refreshments throughout the weekend. You’ll need to bring some lunch. \nCourse Tutor: Barbora Rybarova. An additional tutor will assist if more than 7 students enrol for this course \nMax student numbers: 12 \nCourse Dates: Sat 5 May to Sun 6 May 2018 \nClass Times: 10.00am – 5pm \nCourse Fee: \nFull fee £225 \nConcessions £200 \n\nIf you are on a low wage\, or in receipt of tax credits or other benefit you qualify for the Flux concessionary rate. SUMMARY:Decorative Hand Engraving (HE03)
DESCRIPTION:Decorative Hand Engraving for jewellers and silversmiths: Weekend Course.\nBook Now\nDo you like to draw? Are you passionate about fonts? Jewellery often requires surface detail to be revealed\, or a message\, a word or a symbol to be cut into it. SUMMARY:Perfect Pearls (PP2) - Pearl grading and pearl stringing workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn ways to identify different types of Pearl. Combine gemmology and pearl stringing: put your new knowledge straight into practice with an afternoon workshop session to make a knotted string of pearls.\nWould you know if your pearls were dyed or naturally coloured? What is the difference between a Keshi Pearl and a Baroque pearl?  What is the difference between an Akoya Pearl and a Tahitian Pearl? How do Freshwater Pearls differ from the saltwater variety?  These little shell-fish gems have been favoured treasures since the earliest times; still they captivate us with their lustrous beauty. Have you ever fancied trying your hand at pearl stringing? Join us for a pearl grading workshop\, and make your own knotted string of pearls to wear home. \nOn this one day course you’ll have an opportunity to view a wide range of pearls of various type\, size\, colour and quality. We’ll introduce simple methods for basic identification\, and we’ll look beneath the surface of a sample of pearls to understand their structure. Pearls are organic ‘gemstones’. Although quite resilient\, they are sensitive to chemicals and to general wear and tear; we will discuss  how to take care of them. \nWe want you to make use of this knowledge\, so the class begins with a morning gemmology session followed by an afternoon of practical workshop activity to make your own string of pearls using traditional knotting techniques\, using silk and gimp. \nHow will this workshop help you?\nWhen it comes to making jewellery with gems and gem-like natural materials like pearl and amber\, it’s crucial to know a little bit about the qualities of these materials. Gemstone characteristics\, like hardness\, brittleness\, heat resistance\, porosity and cleavage are all important qualities that affect your choice when designing jewellery. Additionally\, when buying gems\, you need to know how to assess the quality of the item on offer. \nAt each session in our gemmology series we discuss the individual characteristics and behaviours of the particular stones\, to help you become better designers – and better stone setters too. \nWe’ve grouped our range of gemstones according to similar hues\, to better help you understand the differences between similar stones. Choose a workshop according to your preferred colour palette – or join up for the full bonanza 5 Saturdays! \nWhat will you gain?\nAs well as gaining a range of great methods to identify the type and quality of your gemstones\, you will get the chance to set your stone type of choice (or for the pearl workshop you will make a knotted string of pearls ) at the workshop\, to wear home. \nMorning Gemmology Schedule:\nUnderstand the differences between types  and qualities of pearls including: Baroque Pearls\, Keshi Pearls\, Round/Oval Pearls\, Dyed Pearls. \nAfternoon Stone Setting schedule:\nMake your own string of pearls from our selection\, using the traditional knotting technique on silk. \nPerfect Pearls (PP1)\nPP2 BOOK NOW\nCourse Tutors: Elena Timbaliuc and Barbora Rybarova \nMax student numbers: 7 \nCourse Date: Saturday 17 December 2017 \nClass Times: 10am – 5pm \nCourse Fee: £120 \nPP2 BOOK NOW
