If you love the softness of silk, delicacy of lace, intensity of leather or the natural look of cotton, and want to incorporate these qualities into your designs to create fabric and metal jewellery, this course is for you!

What will I learn?

Combining textiles with metal elements can give permanence to the etherial qualities of fabric. We’ll explore a number of ways to draw contrasting elements together using a variety of joining methods including cold connections like riveting, screw threading and weaving.

We’ll examine the characteristics of materials (like resistance, colourfastness, water resistance, stretch, thickness, composition, stiffness). this knowledge will assist you to design unique metal structures – and appropriate connection methods- to accommodate the fabric.

This course gives a great opportunity to explore how to work with different materials in your jewellery making practice, whether you are beginner or advanced.

What will I produce?

It is anticipated that you will produce a range of progressive test pieces that explore cold connections and other joining methods. We anticipate that your samples will provide lasting reference -and inspiration- for your future jewellery projects.

In addition, we encourage you to produce a wearable item that incorporates hard and soft materials, by the end of the weekend.

Materials

The course fee covers the cost of all non-precious materials. Brass, copper and aluminium will be provided for experimentation, and additional materials (acrylic, lace, fabrics, threads, buttons etc) for inclusions will also be provided.

You are encouraged to bring your own fabrics/papers/materials for combining into your designs and tests.

Can I get my work hallmarked?

We are able to offer a hallmarking service for precious jewellery made at Flux – If you would like to have your work hallmarked with the Flux Studios hallmark this can be arranged at cost price.

Tea, coffee and light refreshments are provided throughout the weekend.
