On this course we explore methods to add secondary and perhaps more delicate elements to your metal jewellery.  Firstly you’ll produce a range of tests that explore how to use tabs, screws and rivets for joining rigid and flexible elements together. By incorporate these encapsulating techniques for jewellery you can create innovative designs.

You’ll also have the chance to experiment with watch lenses for jewellery purposes. Much like a picture frame, lenses offer the opportunity to protect delicate materials while showing them to their best. You will get the chance to explore 3 types of lense therefore, that can protect, magnify or allow movement beneath it.

Finally we will look at the use of resins for small scale jewellery work, to encapsulate precious materials.

With the focus on encapsulation each project will also require the development of metalworking techniques. Hence you can expect to develop bezels, frames and claw or tab settings for your designs.

  • Explore ways to join rigid and flexible materials together using tabs, screws and rivets.
  • Experiment with lenses – design and make a pendant, brooch or ring with an encapsulated precious element.
  • Giving delicate objects permanence – tapes, varnishes and resins.

By the end of this course you will have produced a reference of samples that explore how you can incorporate delicate or non metalic elements into your jewellery.
