Chain making and other moveable joints; design and make a necklace clasp (B27)

Creative chain making, linkages and other moveable joints. 6 week course, with an extended 10 week course option to also design and make a clasp for a necklace. (Evening, Tuesdays).

-Experiment with new ways to make chains, and explore how to make rivets, links and screws to join elements together in your jewellery designs. Add creative chain making to your repertoire of techniques. Take the 6 Week course to broaden your knowledge and experience of linkage systems; make a chain to your own, unique design. Choose the 10 Week Option to extend this course to design and make a clasp for your necklace.

The course is presented in short experimental projects that lead towards an understanding of how elements can link together to produce chains and bringing into focus the functional requirements for elements that connect and detach.. These projects develop technical skills while also encouraging experimentation and design development.

Option 1:  6 Week Course

Course Dates: 18 April– 23 May 2017

  • Project 1– experimenting with a wide variety of connective systems that allow movement in jewellery: links, rivets, screw – threads.
  • Project 2 – design and make a series of units that can be linked together to make a chain.

By the end of this course you will know how to: Make a series of links that can work together to allow movement in your jewellery designs; rivet 2 or more elements together; cut a screw and thread to join 2 or more elements together; use these methods of connectivity to add movement as a feature in your jewellery designs

And you will have designed and made your own chain and a second piece of jewellery that incorporates movement.

Option 2: 10 Week Course

  • Project 1 – Permanent joints / Moving joints
  • Project 2 – interconnecting / detachable  elements (clasps)
  • Extension Project – Design and make a clasp for your necklace or chain.

Following the same initial projects, this extended course builds on skills listed above, bringing into focus the functional requirements for elements that connect and detach.

Max student numbers: 12 students with 2 tutors
